Marie Fredriksson, Roxette Singer Died At 61 After Battling With Cancer

Marie Fredriksson, who is a Swedish singer, died on Monday after a 17-year struggle with cancer, her management company verified.

She was 61. She was one-half of pop duo Roxette. Fredriksson and her partner, Per Gessle had thriving solo careers and became friends in the ’80s, ultimately creating Roxette.

“She teamed up with Per in Roxette In 1986 with the aim to reach outside Sweden, and together they began a historical journey that in the upcoming years would make them one of the biggest pop acts in the world,” Fredriksson’s management firm, Dimberg Jernberg Management, mentioned in her announcement.

Roxette’s debut single “Neverending Love” earned them recognition in Sweden, but it was not until 1989’s “The Look” off their second album Look Sharp! that the duo took off globally. The song entered no. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In 1990, their track “It Must Have Been Love” became a tremendous hit after it was featured on the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Roxette traded more than 80 million albums and had many successful world tours. Fredriksson was recognized for putting on a great live show.

In 2002, Fredriksson was diagnosed with a critical brain tumor. After aggressive treatment, she was granted the green light to play again years later. By 2009, Roxette was operating on new music with Fredriksson and Gessle going back on tour. In 2016, Fredriksson’s doctors warned her to slow down and concentrate on her health.

Per Gessle, gave tribute on Tuesday, “Time passes by so fast. It’s not that long ago we spent days and nights in my small apartment in Halmstad, hearing to the music we loved, sharing impossible dreams. And what a vision we eventually got to share,” she told in a statement.

“Thank you, Marie, thanks for everything. You were an excellent musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer,” Gessle continued. “Thanks for painting my black and white songs in the most gorgeous colors. You were the most amazing friend for over 40 years. I’m proud, privileged and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity, and sense of humor. All my love goes out to you and your family. Things will never be the same.”

Fredriksson is survived by husband Mikael Bolyos and her 2 children, Josefin and Oscar. The family requests “for respect in their sorrow. A funeral will happen in silence with only Marie’s closest family present.”
